Ashuganj is the oldest town situated on the bank of river Meghna. This oldest city has a long history of pride in every aspect including industry, agriculture and education. Ashuganj has nine union porishod named Sadar, Charchartola, Durgapur, Talshohor, Shorifpur, Lalpur and Tarua which are blessed with sediment of river Meghna. Territory of the upazila explains its own characteristics.
Naming: Todays AshuganjUpazila has 100years old history. In 1898 Ashuganj was established in the bank of river Meghna with Chorchartola, Araishidha, Jatrapur, Borotolla, Shonarampur, Talshohor, Shohagpur and Bahadurpur village. Before Ashuganj people used to do their trades with Bhairab the other part of Meghna River. Weekly Bazar day of Bhairab was Wednesday. At that time Bhairab bazar was controlled by Mr. Bhairab who imposed unnecessary tax upon the people of east part of river Meghna. Traders were overwhelmed with the taxes of Bhairab authority. Then they started a weekly market on east bank of river Meghna. This locality was then ruled by ZeminderAshutoshNath of SorailPorgona. People named the market Ashuganj by the name of ZemindarAshutoshNath.
AshuganjUpazila is surrounded by Mighty Meghna. Business, Agriculture, Agri-based Industry are also based on river. Ashuganj ensures food security even though it’s a densely populated area and also famous for power station and fertilizer factory. Currently power stations of Ashuganj is producing 1500MW electricity and government has a planning of 7000MW. AshuganjUria Fertilizer Chemical Company Limited is running and also planning for second unit of the factory. Ashuganj river port is renowned in home and abroad for transportation.
